At the invitation of the Dutch government, the Internet Protection Lab held a security awareness workshop with LGBT rights defenders from over 12 different countries. The LGBT rights defenders came to the Netherlands during Gay Pride week to learn more about LGBT rights, how they were fought for and how victories were achieved.
Unfortunately, there are still many countries where being part of the LGBT community is illegal and can result in (life) long prison sentences and in extreme cases even the death penalty. To help these LGBT rights defenders stay safe in the digital domain, the Internet Protection Lab presented different methods with which they could assess their risk and threats and how to mitigate them. Specific cases and examples from the participants were discussed, as well as software and mobile tools they could use to stay safer in the digital domain.
